Celebrate National Ice Cream Month this July

Nothing beats ice cream or a nice refreshing ice lolly on a hot summer’s day, and the average person in the UK eats 9 litres of ice cream every year!* 

You’ll be pleased to hear there’s a whole month dedicated to all things ice cream, and that is the month of July. It even has a special ‘Ice Cream Day’ on Sunday 18th July in 2021.

A few fun facts about ice cream:

• It takes on average 50 licks to finish a scoop of ice cream**

• It takes 11 litres of whole milk to make one gallon of ice cream+

• There is a scientific reason that you can get an ice cream headache: When something really cold touches the roof of your mouth, it makes the blood vessels tense up – this is what causes ‘brain freeze’**

• The UK is tenth in the list of countries who consume the most amount of ice cream, with an average of 7 litres per person per year+

• Around the world, you can find unusual flavours of ice cream such as avocado, garlic, chilli, liquorice, cheese and bacon**

• Ice cream used to be ice without the cream: The Romans used to mix ice or snow with flavourings to make desserts before they decided to add cream into the mix**

• Ice cream cones were invented at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri by concessions vendors as a way for people to eat ice cream easily while they enjoyed the fair

We did some very important in-house research to discover Team Allwag's ice cream eating habits, finding that cookie dough is the most popular flavour with nearly 29% of the team favouring this over other flavours. It was a close debate but 'in a cone' came out on top between a choice of ice cream in a cone or tub. And lastly, over half the team enjoy their ice cream with sauce.
