With many of us returning to the office (and students going back to university campuses), the lunchbox revival has begun! |
|
The origin of the lunchbox |
|
The humble lunchbox is a staple addition to work bags, school bags and picnics to name just a few. But how, when and where did they originate?
Dating back to the mid 1800’s, the original lunchboxes were cleaned out tobacco tins or sturdy dinner pails. They usually featured food such as hard-boiled eggs, vegetables, meat and any other food that was readily available.*
This soon led to children wanting to copy their parents and the trend only grew from there, with commercial and branded lunchboxes soon to follow in the century to come.
In the 1960s-1980s, the metal lunchbox was abandoned in favour of vinyl-covered and plastic boxes that were cheaper to make. This allowed for easy printing of cartoon characters and many more. In fact, the Barbie line was one of the most successful. Then in the 1990s and 2000s, the soft insulated polyester lunch bag took over the market.**

The future of the lunchbox
Lunchboxes come in all shapes and sizes and materials nowadays, but what does the future hold? How will they evolve? Will they continue in popularity?
As mentioned above, 40% of people have dinner leftovers in their lunchboxes, meaning that the demand is increasing for lunchboxes which keep food hot, can be put in the microwave, and are ‘leak proof’.
In addition, with the ongoing demand for more eco-friendly materials in our day to day lives, lunchboxes are now being made from more natural and more sustainable materials.
So why not do your bit for the environment, whilst giving your clients, staff or students somewhere safe to store their lunch at the same time?
