For over 20 years, Pantone’s 'Colour of the Year' has been a much-anticipated announcement by many, and influences the world of design (retail and fashion in particular). This year, Pantone's Colour of the Year has been given to two colours and not just one! |
2021 saw Pantone announce two colours – Grey and Yellow (PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating). |
What is a Pantone? |
A Pantone is a universal language/reference for colours that enables a Pantone matching system (PMS) to be standardised to ensure consistency of printing across manufacturing. This makes it easier for brands when they are trying to create consistency with printed materials. |
There are also different types of pantone, depending on what material you are printing on, as some materials absorb colours differently, or on the finish of the product e.g. matte products. |
More about the colours |
The 2021 grey Pantone selected is already a top choice for home interiors, so this fits that current trend well – this feels calm and steady. |
The yellow brings a feeling of warmth, as it makes people think of the sun, feeling bright, optimistic. Add this to the grey of the pebbles, it makes you think of the beach and nature. |
Dulux had a similar feel to their Brave Ground colour of the year for 2021, where they were inspired by nature and the simpler things in life. Yellow is one of the "warm colours" and certainly makes you think of sunny days. |
The underlying message behind these chosen colours is so important. Pantone believes these colours combined create a unity, and together they represent clarity with energy creating a sense of positivity in these times of uncertainty. |
